Serotonergic dysfunction is implicated in mood disorders and suicidal behaviors. Genetic variants of tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH), a rate-limiting enzyme in the biosynthesis of serotonin, were associated with suicidal behaviors in three reports, but were not found in other studies.
