<title>Abstract</title> <p>Smooth muscle cells (SMC) can undergo distinct fate transitions that influence atherosclerotic plaque phenotype: SMC make up the protective fibrous cap that prevents plaque rupture, but can also transdifferentiate to a destabilizing pro-inflammatory phenotype.
