<h4>Summary</h4> Mutations in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) lead to heteroplasmy, i.e. the intracellular coexistence of wild-type and mutant mtDNA strands, which impact a wide spectrum of diseases but also physiological processes, including endurance exercise performance in athletes.
