Oxidative stress contributes to the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy. In mitochondria, lipoic acid synthase produces α-lipoic acid, an antioxidant and an essential cofactor in α-ketoacid dehydrogenase complexes, which participate in glucose oxidation and ATP generation.
