Human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DR3 haplotypes are associated with susceptibility to type 1 diabetes (T1D). Reports from Northern European populations show that an allele (D6S273*2) at a microsatellite mapping to HLA class III marks an extended DR3-B18 haplotype associated with increased susceptibility to T1D.
