BACKGROUND: The CDH1 gene encodes E-cadherin, an epithelial cell adhesion molecule. Germline CDH1 mutations recently were identified in families with hereditary diffuse gastric carcinoma in a pattern suggestive of autosomal dominant inheritance with incomplete penetrance.
