BACKGROUND: A subset of patients with diffuse gastric cancer harbor deleterious cancer-causing germline mutations in the type 1 E-cadherin (epithelial) gene (CDH1), which predisposes to the autosomal dominantly inherited hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC) syndrome.
