The cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 2a (Cdkn2a) locus encodes two distinct tumor suppressors, p16INK4a and p19ARF, whose functions interrelate in the regulation of cell proliferation as key components of the retinoblastoma and p53 pathways, respectively.
