Random X-chromosome inactivation (XCI) is a hallmark of female mammalian somatic cells. This epigenetic mechanism, mediated by the long non-coding RNA Xist , occurs in the epiblast and is stably maintained to ensure proper dosage compensation of X-linked genes during life.
