Splicing plays a major role in eukaryotic gene expression by processing pre-mRNA to form mature mRNA. Splicing is catalysed by the spliceosome; a ribonucleoprotein complex consisting of five small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs) and over 100 proteins.
