Tandem inverted repeats (TIRs or hairpins) of 30 and 80 base-pair unit lengths are unstable mitotically in yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). TIR instability results from deletions that remove part or all of the presumed hairpin structure from the chromosome.
