Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is caused by mutations in PKD1 or PKD2, the genes encoding polycystin 1 (PC1) and polycystin 2 (PC2), respectively. PC1 and PC2 localize to the primary cilium and form a protein complex, which is thought to regulate signaling events.
