Nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) is a translation-dependent, multistep process that degrades irregular or faulty messenger RNAs (mRNAs). NMD mainly targets mRNAs with a truncated open reading frame (ORF) due to premature termination codons (PTCs).
