Xiphophorine fish from wild populations are insusceptible to develop neoplasia. In contrast, certain backcrosses of Xiphophorus maculatus (platyfish) with Xiphophorus helleri (swordtail) as the recurrent parent, produce offspring that develop neoplasia in a Mendelian fashion.
