The high degree of polymorphism seen at major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II loci is a feature unique to the MHC. Most of the beta-chain polymorphism is localized in "hypervariable" regions (HVRs). HVR amino acid sequence similarity between distantly related species has recently been found.
