Legionella pneumophila, the causative agent of Legionnaires' disease, utilizes a type IVB secretion system to subvert its host cells and grow intracellularly. This type IV secretion system is composed of 25 icm (or dot) genes that probably constitute parts of a secretion complex as well as more than 30 proteins that are translocated via this system into the host cells.
