Hypofunction of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor has been hypothesized to underlie the pathophysiology of schizophrenia, based on the observation that non-competitive antagonists of the NMDA receptor, such as phencyclidine, induce schizophrenia-like symptoms.
