Sulfation catalysed by human cytosolic sulfotransferases is generally considered to be a detoxification mechanism. Recently, it has been demonstrated that sulfation of heterocyclic aromatic amines by human phenol sulfotransferase (SULT1A1) can result in a DNA binding species.
