A single incidence of whole-genome doubling (WGD) is common early in tumorigenesis. In addition to increasing ploidy, WGD doubles centrosome number. In the ensuing mitoses, excess centrosomes form a multipolar spindle, resulting in a lethal multipolar cell division.
