The hormone erythroferrone (ERFE) is produced by erythroid cells in response to hemorrhage, hypoxia or other erythropoietic stimuli, and suppresses the hepatic production of the iron-regulatory hormone hepcidin, thereby mobilizing iron for erythropoiesis.
