AMPA receptors in the CNS are normally impermeable to Ca 2+ but aberrant expression of Ca 2+ -permeable AMPA receptors (CP-AMPARs) occurs in pathological conditions such as ischemia or epilepsy, or in degenerative diseases such as ALS.
