OBJECTIVE: Chondrocytes of the synovial joint sense and respond to changes in osmolarity to maintain joint homeostasis. We hypothesised that an abnormal response to osmotic stress is a contributing factor to loss of joint homeostasis and the development of osteoarthritis (OA).
