The human innate immune factor MxA represents an effective interspecies barrier for zoonotic influenza A viruses (IAVs) of animal origin. Accordingly, human but not avian IAVs efficiently escape the antiviral activity of MxA due to adaptive mutations in their viral nucleoprotein.
