The thiopurine S-methyltransferase (TPMT) gene encoding thiopurine methyltransferase is a crucial enzyme in metabolism of thiopurine drugs: azathioprine and 6-mercoptopurine, which are used in the treatment of leukemia or inflammatory bowel diseases.
