Chromosome segregation is powered by the kinetochore, a large macromolecular structure assembled on centromeric chromatin. Attachment of sister chromatids to microtubules is mediated by the highly conserved tripartite KMN (acronym for KNL-1-Mis12-Ndc80) kinetochore network.
