Two herpes simplex virus type 1 glycoproteins, gE and gI, have been shown to form a complex that binds the Fc domain of immunoglobulin G (IgG). We demonstrate that this complex is required for the binding of monomeric nonimmune IgG but that gE alone is sufficient for binding polymeric IgG in the form of IgG complexes.
