The inositol depletion hypothesis proposes the inhibition of IMPase (myo-inositol monophosphatase) by lithium, a mood stabilizer, as a mechanism of lithium's efficacy. This hypothesis predicts that the upregulation of this biochemical pathway may underlie the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder.
