Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is caused by mutations in the genes that encode sarcomeric proteins and is primarily characterized by unexplained left ventricular hypertrophy, impaired cardiac function, reduced exercise tolerance, and a relatively high incidence of sudden cardiac death, especially in the young.
