Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) is characterized by reciprocal balanced chromosomal translocations involving retinoic acid receptor-alpha (RARalpha). RARalpha heterodimerizes with the retinoid X receptor-alpha (RXRalpha) and transcriptionally regulates myeloid differentiation in response to ATRA (all-trans retinoic acid).
