Although TGFbeta is a potent inhibitor of proliferation, epithelia lacking the essential receptor (TbetaRII) for TGFbeta signaling display normal tissue homeostasis. By studying asymptomatic TbetaRII-deficient stratified epithelia, we show that tissue homeostasis is maintained by balancing hyperproliferation with elevated apoptosis.
