BACKGROUND: Epithelial tissues of the gastrointestinal tract and the liver express predominantly cytokeratin 8 and cytokeratin 18. In vitro experiments and animal studies have demonstrated a protective influence of keratin 8 and keratin 18 against toxic damage of hepatocytes.
