L cell transfectants stably expressing E-cadherin demonstrate a remarkable increase in adherence to extracellular matrix proteins, such as type IV collagen and fibronectin. This enhanced adhesion is mediated by integrin-type cell surface receptors, as assessed by inhibition with anti-receptor antibodies.
