Cerebral malaria (CM) is a serious complication of Plasmodium falciparum malaria, and its pathogenesis leading to coma remains unknown. Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) catalyzes heme breakdown, eventually generating bilirubin, iron and carbon monoxide.
