Hypoactivity of neuropeptide Y (NPY) is thought to be involved in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia, because post-mortem brain studies revealed a decrease of the NPY in schizophrenia, and antipsychotic treatments increase the NPY in animal brains and in cerebrospinal fluid of patients.
