The enzyme delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) catalyses the second reaction in the heme biosynthetic pathway. It has been suggested previously that the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum imports this enzyme from the host cell for de novo heme biosynthesis.
