The Hedgehog (Hh) family of signaling molecules function as organizers in many morphogenetic processes. Hh signaling requires cholesterol in both signal-generating and -receiving cells, and it requires the tumor suppressor Patched (Ptc) in receiving cells in which it plays a negative role.
