Current models of the TCR / CD3 complex assume that, in mature peripheral T lymphocytes, variability is restricted to the alpha beta (or gamma delta) chains of the TCR heterodimer responsible for antigen recognition, whereas the CD3 polypeptides involved in signal transmission are invariant.
