The tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) promoter was used to explore the molecular mechanisms of estradiol (E(2))-dependent repression of gene transcription. E(2) inhibited basal activity and abolished TNF-alpha activation of the TNF-alpha promoter.
