PTEN, a gene encoding a dual specificity phosphatase, is frequently altered in endometrial carcinoma. Moreover, these alterations are observed even in atypical hyperplasia of the endometrium. This evidence suggests that mutation of PTEN is an early genetic alteration involved in endometrial carcinogenesis.
