The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is a well characterized endocrine response system. Hypothalamic Crh in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVH) initiates HPA axis signaling to cause the release of cortisol (or corticosterone in rodents) from the adrenal gland.
