Apolipoprotein B mRNA Editing Enzyme Catalytic Subunit 3 (APOBEC3) proteins are critical for the control of infection by retroviruses. These proteins deaminate cytidines in negative strand DNA during reverse transcription, leading to G to A changes in coding strands.
