Lateral hypothalamic neurons producing melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) and orexin/hypocretin are involved in sleep regulation. Both MCH and orexin neurons are altered in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the most common adult-onset motor neuron disease.
