The Leishmania life cycle alternates between promastigotes, found in the sandfly, and amastigotes, found in mammals. When an infected sandfly bites a host, promastigotes are engulfed by phagocytes ( i.e. , neutrophils, dendritic cells, and macrophages) to establish infection.
