Piwi-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) play key roles in germline development and genome defence in metazoans. In C. elegans , piRNAs are transcribed from >15000 discrete genomic loci by RNA polymerase II, resulting in 28 nt short-capped piRNA precursors.
