Background: Patients with chronic inflammatory diseases including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) demonstrate endothelial dysfunction. The inflammatory response triggered by endothelial injury leads to reduced NO biosynthesis, while increasing superoxide generation, monocyte adhesion and endothelial cell (EC) apoptosis.
