Instability of microsatellites is a hallmark of the DNA replication error phenotype (RER+) due to the inactivation of mismatch repair genes. In humans, microsatellite instability has first been described in colorectal tumors developing in either hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer or sporadic patients.
