Insulin, glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) and the protein tyrosine phosphatase-like molecule IA-2 are major targets of humoral autoimmunity in insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). These autoantibodies are heterogeneous with respect to age and patient human leukocyte antigen (HLA) phenotype.
