In an enhancer screen for yeast mutants that may interact with U1 small nuclear RNA (snRNA), we identified a gene that encodes the apparent yeast homolog of the well-studied human U1A protein. Both in vitro and in vivo, the absence of the protein has a dramatic effect on the activity of U1 snRNP containing the mutant U1 snRNA used in the screen.
