Wild-type mutants highly resistant to fluoroquinolones were selected in vitro from a quinolone-susceptible Escherichia coli isolate by stepwise exposure to increasing concentrations of nalidixic acid and ciprofloxacin (CIP) either in liquid medium or on solid medium.
