A number of gene alterations have been detected in human breast cancer, and their clinicopathological implications have been investigated. Amplification of the c-erb B-2 gene and point mutations of the p53 gene are shown to be associated with biological aggressiveness of cancer cells, whereas loss of heterozygosity on chromosome 16q is suggested to be associated with acquirement of malignant phenotype.
